TTT - Top Ten Bookish Goals for 2014

Another Tuesday already? Must be time to talk about books and link up with the Broke and the Bookish!

Let's talk about my top ten bookish goals for 2014, shall we?

1. To read more books than last year.
Okay, so I read 170 books last year. I'd still like to get back up to 175, like I did in 2012, or maybe even to 180. I've already finished seven books this year, so at the moment I'm on target for 365, but that's never going to happen!!

2. To track how many pages I read each day.
This is curiosity more than anything. Because I know for a fact that there were some days last year when I read about 20 pages and some days where I read 600 pages. I want to see what my daily average works out to.

3. To read more non-fiction.
I read a whopping THREE non-fiction books last year, so it shouldn't be hard to beat that one!

4. To re-read more.
Since I started reviewing things on Goodreads, I've gotten out of the habit of re-reading and have instead been focusing almost exclusively on books I haven't read before. I think it's time to go back and re-read a bunch of my favourites and review those too!

5. To review every book I read.
I've been doing this the past couple of years, and I'd like to think that my reviews are getting better (although I'm not sure they are...). Still, I think it's helpful not only to others but to me in remembering how I felt about a particular story.

6. To read at least one classic that I haven't read before.
In addition to the re-reading thing, I have a bunch of classics that people have given me over the years that I never actually bothered to read (Martin Chuzzlewit, Middlemarch and Our Mutual Friend are the three that immediately spring to mind). It doesn't have to be one that I own, but I'd like to read at least one classic that's new to me!

7. To read outside my comfort zone.
I'm not saying that I'm going to start reading physics textbooks or anything, but it probably wouldn't hurt to branch out from my little urban fantasy/YA bubble!

8. To check the library first and Amazon second.
I've developed a tendency to discover a title that I want to read through Goodreads or a book blog and immediately look up how much the Kindle edition is on Amazon. I usually draw the line at anything over $9, because I'm a cheapskate. But I should still work on checking my local library's catalogue first.

9. To DNF if warranted.
I've only ever not finished six books. But with many others, I've plough on for hundreds of pages, despite being completely bored or hating the characters or finding the plot completely ridiculous. I need to get better at saying "You know what? This is going on the DNF pile."

10. To participate in Bout of Books 10.
I've watched from the sidelines for THREE Bout of Books now, and every time I'm like "That sounds fun, I should do that!". And then I don't. Next time, Gadget. Next time.

What are your bookish goals for 2014?

  1. I really want to try to reread more, too. That's why I started out the year with a reread.

    Good luck!

    1. I didn't realise how much I missed some of my favourite stories until I started rereading them! Good luck with your goals too :)

  2. I want to try and review every book I read as well. Also, I'm good at putting books down if they suck. What I need to work on is putting them down if they are mediocre. Even if I'm sort of mildly interested in what's happening, it makes it a chore to read and reading is my favorite thing IN THE WORLD.

Also, I really want to do Bout of Books 10! Want to do it together for some support & encouragement? :)

    1. Uh, YES. I definitely need support and encouragement to actually sign up and participate in Bout of Books. We should definitely do it together (worked out great for me last year with VEDA!)

  3. Oh! Thanks for reminding me about Bout of Books! We have some similar goals. I highly recommend sticking with the DNF one. I love the freedom that comes with that one. Good luck! ~Megan

    1. I shall do my best to stick with DNFing things. Because in my experience, the books that I want to DNF but don't ever get any better! Good luck to you too :)
