Going on safari

Okay, not really because I'm kind of poor. But a week or so ago, the parentals and I took Little Miss A to the closest you can get to going on safari without leaving Melbourne - Werribee Open Range Zoo! And because this is me we're talking about, I took my zoom lens along for the ride.

I would say more, but it's a thousand degrees in Melbourne at the moment and my brain has melted. So instead, I present you with some photos from our day at the zoo, because REASONS:

My personal favourite was the serval show, despite the small screaming child puncturing everyone's eardrums in the background, because it was just so stinking adorable:

Although a close second was seeing the brand new baby hippo from the safari bus, because OMG SO CUTE:

Have you been to an open range zoo and/or on safari? Which of these animals is your favourite?

  1. I love me the kitties. Every time I see a Servil/any big cat I ask IC if we can get one. I mean, Servils are only slightly bigger (except for the ears which are A LOT bigger) than a house kitty.

    1. I had the exact same reaction to the servals, which is to say "OMG I WANT ONE SOMEONE BUY ONE FOR ME IMMEDIATELY!!!"

  2. I LOVE THE PRIMATES. But I always love primates. I guess that's sort of the problem with studying primatology as half of your anthropology program: you sort of fall in love with them all.

I think we went to some drive-through park in... the Midwest somewhere when I was little. The closest I've been otherwise has been the "safari tram" (yes, tram) at the Wild Animal Park (now "San Diego Zoo Safari Park").

    1. Oh man, wait until I get up to the story of Kim and I going to the zoo in Wellington. There was a dude there who's going to get his face ripped off by a baboon someday...

And the safari tram sounds HILARIOUS.

  4. Coincidentally, I wrote about both cheetahs and zebras for work today. So I was primed to enjoy your gorgeous pics! Thanks, Kirsti! P.S. It is hot in LA, too, but it is WINTER. Sorry, I didn't mean to get shouty. Just am reeeeeally longing for the season it actually is.

    1. Hot weather during winter is always disconcerting! At least you didn't have four days straight over 110 degrees F with overnight lows of about 85 degrees F... O.o

  5. Well, first of all, beautiful pictures, particularly the second one. Second, I had no idea that something as adorable as servals existed. Third, the photobombing ostrich made my day :)

The safari thing is definitely a better setup than traditional zoos. When my family went to the Detroit Zoo, we didn't end up seeing about a fifth of the animals (including the wolves, which would have been awesome). Also, there was an unadvertised excursion into a tunnel surrounded by water on all sides, and I HATE water.

    1. The safari thing has its cons, including the fact that you can't linger for as long as you'd like to - you constantly have to keep moving. But it's definitely better than only getting to see like half the animals because the rest are hiding at the back of their enclosures!
