Movie Monday: The "what I'm looking forward to in 2014" edition

Um. How is it the end of another year already?! I could have sworn that it was only about September last time I checked... Anyway, given that it's the end of the year, let's talk about the stuff I'm excited about seeing next year, shall we? I'll warn you now, it can pretty much be summed up as "Marvel movies and adaptations of YA books", because OBVIOUSLY.

The Fault in Our Stars
The poster that was released during the Project for Awesome gave me All the Feels, so I can't even begin to imagine how much of a trainwreck I'll be when the movie actually comes out...

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
You guys, I am SO EXCITED FOR THIS MOVIE OMFG. The trailer is so completely and utterly BAMF-tastic, and I've been fangirl flailing since it first came out.

The Monuments Men
Okay, so this looks a little bit like Ocean's Eleven set in World War II, but whatevs. It still looks pretty fun, and with a nice dose of history added in for good measure!

Look, I'm still not convinced by the casting of Four. Theo James is literally the complete opposite of what I had in my head when it came to Four. But I'm still pretty excited about seeing this story come to life on the big screen.

X-Men: Days of Future Past
I'm a little unsure about this, because some of the shots in the trailer make it look like X-Men Go To The Disco. But whatever, it's Marvel so I'm still excited about the next installment of the story.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
I saw the trailer for this when I went to see American Hustle the other day, and it looks pretty incredible. And there's no doubt in my mind that Idris Elba will do the role justice. This is also my personal reminder that I really do need to read Long Walk to Freedom one of these days...

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Okay, so the trailer looks a little over the top, and some of the special effects are a little meh-tastic. But I really enjoyed the first one, and it's Marvel, so...yeah.

The Lego Movie
Oh my God. Words cannot describe how excited I am about this film. It's going to be completely ridiculous and utterly insane, and I am looking forward to it with every fibre of my being.

Mockingjay Part 1
I have yet to see Catching Fire, because I'm a bad fangirl (plus, it came out when I was in New Zealand and by the time I got home everyone else had already seen it). But I've heard nothing but good things about it. So I have high hopes for Mockingjay, especially seeing as according to IMDB, Danny Strong (Jonathan from Buffy) is writing the script.

Guardians of the Galaxy
I know almost nothing about the characters involved in this installment of the MCU, but I have no doubt in my mind that it will be fabulous.

What movies are you looking forward to seeing in 2014?

K xx

  1. I haven't seen Catching Fire yet either - but at this rate I'll just wait for it to come out on video. I'm excited about Monuments Men as well.

  2. 2014 is definitely going to be a great year for movies.

The trailer for The Winter Soldier was pretty great, and I'm especially excited about Robert Redford. They're going for a '70's conspiracy thriller vibe, and All the President's Men is one of my favorite movies, so it'll be cool to see him on the other side of the story. More Cap, Nick Fury, and Black Widow is also a good thing, and Falcon's costume design is great, although I know nothing about the character. I am, however, a bit apprehensive about Guardians of the Galaxy. The source material seems a bit ridiculous, so the movie could easily be a huge disaster without a very careful hand.

Days of Future Past is one of the movies I'm most looking forward to, although I haven't see The Wolverine yet, so I'll probably do that before the summer. The costumes/hair in the trailer don't worry me since Frost/Nixon had bad '70's fashion, but they avoided going too over-the-top. Huh, that's two mentions of my Watergate/Nixon obsession in quick succession. Weird.

The trailers for The LEGO Movie have been hilarious, particularly Will Arnett(!) as Batman, and since I love LEGOs, I've got my fingers crossed that it'll be good.

I haven't read any of those YA books, or in the case of Mockingjay, seen the first two movies. I read The Hunger Games and wasn't really impressed enough to read the others or see the movies.

Why no mention of There and Back Again? It's probably the movie I'm most looking forward to. There's just so much awesome material the first two didn't cover, the movie's going to be pretty much wall-to-wall action.

    1. No mention of There and Back Again because a) I'd completely forgotten about its existence, and b) I still haven't seen Desolation of Smaug, so have no idea what's been included and what hasn't!

  3. Please don't tell me they're making Mockingjay a two-parter...ugh. Other than that I'm excited for the movie. And of course for TFiOS and the Veronica Mars movie plus the Bomb Girls movie wherever that will be released.

    1. You know for every big movie franchise they have to split the finale into 2 parts. It worked for HP, so now everyone has to jump on the bandwagon ;)

    2. Which is something I hate. Like I also hate that they split The Hobbit in 3 movies. But nobody ever listens to me :)

    3. I'm not a huge fan of them splitting stories into multiple movies either, but given the option between that and "two hour movie that barely scrapes the surface of what happens in the book" (see: Harry Potter 4-6), I'll take the two movies option!

  4. OMG CATCHING FIRE AND MOCKINGJAY. I was so tense during Catching Fire my entire body was shaking and I had cramps in my arms and legs the rest of the movie. So there's that.

TFioS - I can't even. I'm gonna bawl like a baby. Not even ashamed.

Divergent- I'm still getting over Allegiant. I'm excited for the movie, but I'll probably also bawl like a baby simply because I know how it all ends. I can barely watch the trailers.

    1. I really want to know if the movie studio are all "Well, crap" about their decision to make Divergent into a movie now that they know how the series ends.

  5. I am SO excited for Veronica Mars and TFioS! Also, I have some nostalgia about Vampire Academy so I'm interested to see what they do with the movie. It doesn't hurt that SMG was giving the star of the movie tips on how to use a stake via Twitter photo ;)

    1. Yeah she took a photo near a promo pic for Vampire Academy and she said, "If you need any tips on how to use a stake, let me know." Or something to that effect. It was so amazing. I may have flailed a bit.

  6. this looks a little bit like Ocean's Eleven set in World War II, but whatevs.
LOL. Legit. It does look like it'll be good.

    (Mockingjay can come too.)
