So when I saw a couple of months ago that Me First and the Gimme Gimmes were going to be touring Australia, I obviously turned to Twitter looking for someone else who was equally excited about the prospect of seeing a punk cover band. And luckily for me, I found someone - my BFF Kat's younger sister, Megan!
So on Sunday night, after much flailing with excitement over Twitter in the days preceding, we headed into the Corner Hotel. It was a decidedly weird crowd, with everyone from 50-somethings to 18 year olds, from full-blown plaid-wearing, mohawk-having punks to a woman in a suit and heels who looked like she'd come straight from church. So...that was interesting.
The show, however, was pretty fantastic. I was a little disappointed that they didn't do my all time favourite - The Boxer - and that they didn't play Friday On My Mind, which seems like an enormous oversight on their Australian tour. But overall, it was a lot of fun. They played a lot of their older stuff (which I far prefer to their newer ukulele-filled stuff), including Leaving on a Jet Plane, Only the Good Die Young, Mandy, Rocket Man, Over the Rainbow, and Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard.
Their running joke between songs was "This next one's a cover", which had the girl in front of us - a non-punk fan who'd been dragged along by her boyfriend - incredibly confused.
Anyway, it was a pretty spectacular concert, despite the incredibly tall men who kept ending up directly in front of us... It's definitely worth going to see Me First and the Gimme Gimmes in concert if you ever get the chance!
