Me and makeup

I'm going to start by apologising to my minuscule number of male readers. Y'all are going to be bored today.

So it turns out that I follow quite a few fashion bloggers, people who are really into fashion and accessorising and make up and what have you.

If you know me personally, you're probably aware that I'm pretty much the complete opposite. About 75% of my clothes come from Target, I haven't been shopping since my birthday back in April (shopping for CLOTHES, that is. Shopping for sonic screwdrivers is a completely different thing!), I wear the same jewellery every day (because to not do so requires making decisions, and I suck at making decisions), and I have almost no make up. I didn't own ANY make up until I was fifteen, and I only ended up with any because of the year 10 formal.

So seeing as it's almost the end of NaBloPoMo, meaning that I'm running low on ideas, I figured I'd show you guys my make up collection. Are you ready?

This is my make up bag. It cost me $10 at Portmans.

And here are its contents:
Clinique Superbalanced Makeup in Petal. I only wear foundation on one of two types of occasion: 1. Going out somewhere fancy pants, and 2. Vlogging, in an attempt to look somewhat less pasty. As a result of this, I've only ever owned two bottles of foundation. I threw the first one out last year when a) I realised it was 13 years old, and b) I figured I should probably have vaguely decent foundation for the weddings I had to go to.  I foresee this bottle lasting me another ten years or so. (Yes, I'm aware that it's really bad to keep your make up that long. It hasn't killed me yet, so whatevs.)

Wet 'n' Wild Mega Liner. I bought it for $3 at a CVS in Boston last year. I suck at doing eyeliner, but this makes me look less like a panda than some I've used previously.

Covergirl Urban Basics eye shadow. It cost like $8. Apparently you can use it to create a "smoky eye" effect. I have very little idea what the fuck that means, let alone how to do it. So I just use the two in the middle.

Clinique's High Impact mascara in black. I bought like five of these when I was in the US last year (Why, you ask? US price: $15. Australian price: $38.). And yes, I use black mascara rather than black-brown.

Clinique Airbrush Concealer in...I have no freaking clue what, and I'm too lazy to go check. Exceptionally pasty, at any rate. It's great.

Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey. It's the only lipstick I ever wear, and it barely even qualifies for the name. It's more like coloured gloss without the stickiness.

And that? Is literally it. The full contents of my make up bag. Total cost: about $100.

Which end of the spectrum do you fall into? The lots of products end? Or the "I can totally wear the same make up with every outfit" end??

K xx

  1. I hardly wear any either. i have a pallet of blacks/silvers from Sephora because I decided about a year ago that I should know how to do the smoky eye that everyone raves about. Um, yeah... I only wear one of the silvers on a somewhat regular basis. I also wear some like seven dollar mascara, and I"m still working my way through a stash of lip gloss I bought at least a couple years ago now. There is no judging, it was being discontinued and on clearance for dirt cheap! Other than that, no foundations or eye liner or powders of whatnot. I'm super low maintenance with the makeup deaiio.

    1. I just don't have the energy or motivation to wear a ton of make up every day. I mean, it's bad for your skin and it just results in the need to wear more and more, so...PASS.

  2. My make-up bag consists of moisturiser with sunscreen (I wear it for the sunscreen factor, not the moisturising one) and blistex. That's it. I used to break out eye-shadow, liner and mascara for fancy events, but I always feel weird and not-me when I do that, so I've stopped. Life without make-up is excellent!

    1. It really really is. I only wear the mascara and concealer on a regular basis. The rest is fancy events only territory!

  3. Kindred spirit!

I am such a makeup no-hoper in that, well, I know how to put makeup on well and all that but I just. Don't. CARE. Most of the time I don't even wear makeup TO WORK. Three out of the five days I'll subtly swipe some kohl eyeliner, AT MOST I add mascara.

    And that's it.

I wear foundation once or twice a year, IF THAT. I do like my red lippie, though, and I'll put that on...once a week, maybe?

(Could I SOUND like more of a scrag?!)

"Apparently you can use it to create a 'smoky eye' effect. I have very little idea what the fuck that means, let alone how to do it."

    BWAHAHAHAHAH!!

    Thank you for that. :-)

  4. I think I can count the number of times I've worn make-up on one hand. With three fingers having been cut off. Ouch.

That said, I do like that Black Honey lip gloss stuff. Even if its name is wrong.

    1. Yeah, the name is weird as hell. But it's SO much nicer than regular lipstick, and so much better than glosses, which are pretty much a recipe for "My hair is stuck in my mouth right now" in my book!

  5. I'm slowly learning how to be a girl and do my makeup. My basic everyday look is foundation, blush, mascara. DONE. Then when I have to look nicer (or when I'm doing a vlog and I want my face to show up and look all pretty) I'll add eyeshadow, eye liner, etc. I do have a couple of lipsticks and glosses that I like too. I was hanging out with a friend of mine over Thanksgiving and she was super proud of me that I don't have to ask someone else to do my make up for me now.

But can you teach me about this whole "not shopping for clothes" thing? I feel as though that would be really useful for me in life.

    1. It helps to be unemployed and live in a country where a pair of jeans will set you back about $75... But mostly, I just find shopping really boring. I think it might be an introvert thing? Shopping = going out in public = I have to talk to people = NO DON'T WANT TO = I avoid it like the plague. Also, I inherited the cheapskate Scottish gene, so spending money makes me sad.

  6. I wear makeup very rarely (of course, I go out very rarely), and when I do it's usually just concealer, powder, and mascara. The products where I have the most variety -- lipstick and eyeshadow -- are the ones I hardly ever wear anyway. I should really throw out most of my lipstick since it's all really old. My eyeshadow is much more recent and I'm trying to get better about using different colors in combination, although I still don't really know what I'm doing.

    1. I should probably throw away the almost-dead lipsticks (ALSO Clinique Black Honey) that live in the bottom of my handbag. But UGH EFFORT. I should probably also throw out the face powder that I have in my chest of drawers, because I got it in 1998, and I'm pretty sure it will kill me by now...

  7. I'll be the first one in the opposite end of the spectrum..

Most everyday, (to work, even), my regimen tends to go in this order: green concealer (for the redness), yellow concealer (to hide my 'zombie' look), foundation, eye liner, eye shadow, mascara, blush. The only thing I usually skip is lipstick, because I have some pretty awesome, naturally colored lips, if I say so myself! That's where carmex comes in ;-)

But I too, have never figured out the whole 'smokey eye' look... I think that's exclusively Hollywood knowledge or something.

    1. I'm sure you look FAR more presentable than I do on a daily basis!! :)

That said, I'm glad I'm not the only one with no idea how to do a smokey eye look...

  8. I was about to say...I feel like the odd ball out here because I do wear makeup pretty much every day.

I start with the Arbonne makeup primer (most days, not all of them) and then use a stick concealer from Neutrogena for pimples/red spots and such and then a liquid concealer from Garnier specifically designed for under-eye bags and dark circles. Next comes Maybelline's Dream Matte Mousse foundation followed by the Dream Matte Powder to set the foundation.

I rarely wear blush unless I'm going out for a specific event because my cheeks tend to be pretty rosy without it (even after the foundation).

I usually do cream/light tan/brown eyeshadow (from Mary Kay), but I also have the Avon stuff that's supposed to play up your eye color, so on days when I feel like dressing up or whatever, I use that eyeshadow. Then comes CoverGirl Perfect Point Plus charcoal eyeliner (usually) and CoverGirl Lashblast Volume black-brown mascara (unless I'm going to a formal event, then it's very black mascara). And then some days, again if I'm feeling particularly dressy, I fill in my eyebrows with a dark brown eyeshadow.

Also...here's a smokey eye tutorial, just in case, you know, you ever need it. :P

    1. I'm sure the process is really quick once you've done it a thousand times, but DUDE. That sounds crazy time consuming. Which - let's face it - is the reason why I hardly wear any make up. I'm far too lazy!! :)

  9. I have a very small make-up collection too. I don't wear it from day to day for a number of reasons, the primary one being that I am lazy... And secondly because I'm just not very good at applying it. I do wear it for special occasions, but even then I don't wear a lot, otherwise my lack of style and elegance leads to me looking like a clown!

  10. I LOOOOOOOVE makeup. But I don't wear it every day. To work, at most I'll wear blusher, mascara and concealer.

But I own every product under the sun, because when I want to wear makeup I try to make it a work of art! I love playing with eyeshadows, lipsticks, etc... it's like painting, but on my own head.

Mostly I just find it fun. But it's not about how confident I am, because I'm perfectly happy going to work five days a week with none/very little.

    1. Maybe that's why I'm not fussed about make up - I was always terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible at art and hated every second of art class!! ;)

  11. I loves the makeup. I don't wear it every day because 1) my kids don't care and 2) it's not great for my skin.

I buy drugstore brands, because we are broke and cannot afford department store brands. Every single piece of makeup/applicators cost me $5 or less. But I do have a lot of it. Four or five eye shadow palettes, three tubes of mascara, five eye liner shades... the only thing I do not own is lipstick. I wear tinted gloss instead. My lips dry out very easily, and lipsticks end up being all flaky and GROSS.

To be honest... I use vaseline on my lips most days.

    1. This is why I buy 99% of my make up in the US. Because drugstore brands here cost what department store brands cost in the US. And the stuff that you CAN get for under $10 is apparently designed with prostitutes in mind... O.o

My current lip balm is from Celestial Seasonings, the tea company. It's awesome, and I may cry when it runs out. Or bribe my friends in Colorado to go to the factory and buy more for me. Either way!

  12. Before I culled my makeup box you should have come over to do my makeup, it would have made a fabulous vlog! I only have a few products now but they were a little costly. I'm enjoying having just a bronzer and some eye make up now. I don't really like putting mascara and eyeliner on but I try. I'd eventually like to have everything fit nicely into a small bag like you do. That's perfect!

    1. Hahahahaha, it would have been EXACTLY like those "My boyfriend does my make up" tagged videos on Youtube. Although I'd have an advantage in having at least a vague idea of what the different products were!

And pretty much the only reason that I wear mascara every day is that I look really sleepy without it...

  13. I didn't own any makeup until I was 19. And I really suck at eyeliner.
