Movie Monday: Sherlock Holmes

This week's choice was kind of a last minute decision. I'd originally been planning on rewatching Phantom of the Opera, because I downloaded the original London cast soundtrack last week and spent every day listening to it on the tram. But after spending eight hours in the car on both Friday and Sunday, and with tracks from the soundtrack popping up regularly, I was a little over it by the time we got home last night! So you get this instead.

Reasons why Sherlock Holmes is awesome:
1. Robert Downey Junior. He's brilliant. (Not QUITE as brilliant as he was in The Avengers, but still!)
Source
2. The fight in the boat yard.
3. Holmes hanging out in prison.
4. Jude Law, sporting a spectacular moustache. He's pretty great as Watson.
Source
5. The boxing match.
6. Holmes hanging himself at the end.
7. The scene where the maid finds Holmes handcuffed naked to the bed.
8. Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler.
Source
9. Mark Strong as Lord Blackwood. He has a spectacular billowy cloak of doom, which lets you know he's the bad guy.
10. The music.
11. Wheeeeeeee, creepy secret societies!!
12. Gladstone, the dog.
Source
13. Dredger.
14. Irene's costumes. They're pretty amazing.
15. The scene in the abattoir.
16. EPIC BROMANCE.
Source
17. The fortune teller. Hilarious.
18. Exploding graves.
19. Moriarty, albeit in a "we're building up to a second movie" kind of a way.
20. The fight scene on the under-construction Tower Bridge.
Source
21. Mary throwing wine at Holmes.
22. Holmes escaping out the window and into the Thames.

Plus, the following quotes:
- "Suicide is not in his repertoire. He's far too fond of himself for that."
- "You'll miss me, Sherlock." "Sadly...yes."
- "Holmes! Does your depravity know no bounds??" "No."
- "You. Look. GORGEOUS!" (Watson to Holmes)
- "That's not Blackwood!" "Well. Now we have a firm grasp of the obvious..."
- "You do know what you're drinking is meant for eye surgery?"
- "Get that out of my face." "It's not in your face, it's in my hand." "Get what's in your hand out of my face."
- "Why are you always so suspicious?" "Should I answer chronologically or alphabetically?"
- "He's killed the dog! Again..."
- "It's happening! Whether you like it or not. 8.30. The Royale. Wear a jacket." "You wear a jacket..."
- "It's a matter of professional integrity! No girl wants to marry a doctor who can't tell if a man's dead or not!"
- "In another life, Mr Holmes, you would have made an excellent criminal." "Yes, and you an excellent policeman!"

Random and mostly unrelated questionnaire: Which do you prefer - Sherlock Holmes or Sherlock??? Robert Downey Junior or Benedict Cumberbatch? Because I honestly can't decide...

(Also, do you have any idea how hard it is to find photos for this movie? All the search results bring up pictures from Sherlock AND from The Avengers, and you have to sort through mountains of irrelevant and distracting awesomeness...)

  1. I loved this movie. The fight in the boat yard was probably my favorite scene. And Jude Law made an awesome Watson, when I read the books again, I still retained my image of Sherlock Holmes but Jude Law was Watson!

    1. You know, that actually makes perfect sense! I'm pretty sure if I reread the books, I'd have exactly the same mental image. And yes, the fight in the boat yard is my favourite too!

  2. I love both of them! Don't make me decide! If I had to choose, I think I'd pick the movies, simply because of the gorgeous costumes.

Also thank-you for reminding me to watch the second season of Sherlock!

    1. I liked the second season of Sherlock more than the first season. Especially the episode with Irene Adler!! I think I'd probably go with the movies too, just because it's nice to not have to deal with the Stephen Moffat mindfucks for a change... ;)

  3. I LOVE your movie reviews.

    That is all.

Wait, 'cept it's NOT totally "all". Bwah! Robert Downey Jr is indeed brilliant and Teh Shit. I've loved him since, wait for it, Hearts and Souls. YUUUUP.

Also, Yogi and I were at my sister- and brother-in-law's place on Saturday, and we were tossing up between watching Sherlock Holmes or Tower Heist. We STUPIDLY chose the latter and suffered for it. GOOD LORD what a lame movie...! Kicking myself now even more for not listening to my gut instinct and voting for Sherlock Holmes.

    Bah humbug!

(In Yogi's and my defence, however, his sister said the movie was good. I attribute her momentary lapse in judgement to having a one-and-a-half-year-old and being fatigued.)

    XOXO

    1. OH MY GOD, I LOVED HEART AND SOULS WHEN I WAS A KID. I'd totally forgotten about it. Thank you for reminding me of its existence!! <3

  4. All I have to say is BENEDICT, BITCH. BENEDICT. He's infinitely better than RDJ, and his cheek structure is mesmerising.

However, I love the pre-fight fight scenes in Sherlock Holmes. You know, with the explanations.

  5. I love this movie on its own merits, but it will always hold a special place in my heart because I went into labor while watching this in the theater. On New Year's Eve.

    1. Awwwwwwwww. Did you get to stay to the end?? Because someone I worked with at the museum went into labour during Deathly Hallows Part 2, and was super pissed because her partner was all "Um, honey? I think we should go to the hospital now..." and wouldn't let her stay until the end of the movie!

    1. I really wish I could afford to go and see The Avengers again. It was so great!! I'll just have to try and fill the gap until it comes out on DVD with this, the second one, and all the movies that led up to The Avengers...

And yes, I have seen Sherlock! I still can't decide which one of the two I love more...

  7. This movie (and its sequel) may or may not have cause me to have a teensy-tiny crush on the now-detoxed Robert Downey Jnr, not to mention Jude Law and his moustache. And now I'm officially old...

    1. Crushes on RDJ are to be encouraged. Because he's totally hot and a freaking genius.

  8. Robert Downey Jr and I have a special relationship that no man could ever mess with...I have adored him since a. Chaplin - RDJ is BRILLLLLLIIANNT

and b. Ally Mcbeal - when he sings with Sting...SWOOOON (although if that were me in that bar being serenaded to, it would be the most awkward moment ever. Serenaded is NEVER romantic in the real world, and when men realise this, there will be less awkwardness...Yeah, I said it).
