Movie Mondays: That Thing You Do!

Recently, the lovely Gina has been posing questions on Twitter, asking what people's favourite movies by a particular actor are. The other day, the actor in question was Tom Hanks. Now, I have issues with Tom Hanks. I don't know what it is, but on the whole I can't stand his movies. Forrest Gump? Makes me want to stab myself in the eye. Sleepless in Seattle? Cue vomiting. Cast Away? Excuse me while I break out the Hulk Hands. I actually fell asleep in the movie theatre seeing The Da Vinci Code. And don't even get me started on Apollo 13!!*

This movie, therefore, is one of a handful of films starring Tom Hanks that I can stand (the others being Catch Me If You Can, A League of Their Own, and the Toy Story series). In case you're unfamiliar with it, it's the story of a band called the Oneders (later the Wonders due to epic confusion over how the band name is pronounced) from small town Pennsylvania and their rise to (albeit temporary) fame in the 1960s.

Reasons why That Thing You Do! is awesome:
1. Steve Zahn. His character is about 80% of why I love this movie.
2. The soundtrack.
3. Ethan Embry.
4. Tom Hanks having a little rocking out moment during 'Dance with Me Tonight'.
5. Tom Everett Scott.
6. The scene at Disneyland.
7. Charlize Theron as Tom Everett Scott's unenthusiastic girlfriend. She has ENORMOUS and hilarious hair.
8. Not only did Tom Hanks star in it, he also wrote the screenplay, directed it, and wrote a decent chunk of the music. You have to admit, that's pretty incredible.
9. Chris Isaak plays Tom Everett Scott's religious record producing uncle.
10. The occasionally bonkers costumes (including, but not limited to, a shirt that looks like it was stolen from Doctor Evil. I tried and failed to find a picture of this. SAD FACE.).
11. The scene where they win the talent show and Ethan Embry jumps up and down with excitement and his guitar strap breaks.

Plus, the following quotes:
- "Are those prescription [sunglasses] or are you just trying to look cool?" "Well... I AM the drummer..."
- "What if they ask for an encore?" "You unplug and you run! Run off stage! Smiling... Smiling, of course. No encore."
- "Hey, Uncle Bob? When are we gonna get these records?" "[thinks] Ah, Luke 21:19." "...Let your patience possess ye your souls." "Luke?? Who's Luke? When are we getting the records??" "[sigh] Wednesday."
- "Skitch, how did we get here?" "I led you here, sir, for I am Spartacus."
- "Darlene, you just got promoted." "You mean you're going to start paying me?" "I didn't say that."
- "Oh, there he goes, off to his room to write that hit song, 'Alone in my Principles'..."
- "You're playing at a restaurant by the AIRPORT?"
- "Guys? Chad fell down..."
- "Wait, where was I? Oh, right. Playing my guitar!"
- "Shame on me for kissing you with my eyes closed so tight."
- "[laying out money] Know what this is?" "Presidential flashcards?"
- "The word is out on you O-nee-ders!" "Hey! That's O-ned-ers."
- "So, how long have you been working at Playtone?" "How long have you been wearing such tight pants?" "If that was a pick up line, we're a match made in Heaven!"

So, does anyone other than me, Gina and Kim love this movie??

K xx

* I won't judge you for loving any of the above. I just won't watch them with you.

  1. *ahem*

I'm pretty sure I still remember all the words to the song

  2. When I first saw the title I thought "I haven't seen that movie", but then I remembered I had, or at least seen bits of it... must get it out on DVD & watch it again :)

  3. I am pretty sure that you only listed about half of the awesome things about this movie. Tom Hanks' wife playing an easy cocktail waitress? Awesome.

Plus, tons more funny quotes, too. This is one of those movies that gets better every time you watch it because you see/hear something hilarious that you never noticed before.

I love you for posting this.

  4. Love this movie! That thing you do ....

And can we add Polar Express to Tom Hanks' awesome movies? Because I love that one. And I agree about Cast Away and a few of those other ones. BLAH.

  5. This movie made me want to be a drummer. I have done nothing to accomplish said goal. Parents wouldn't buy me a drum set.

  6. I, too, have issues with Tom Hanks. Although Splash is so awesomely awful that I've always had a soft spot for it! And Big. I can't lie to you, I kind of love Big.

  7. @Kim - I'll go you one better. I HAVE THE ALBUM.
    @Melissa - it's so great!
@Gina - I had to restrain myself for fear of listing the entire script. I wanted to include Cap'n Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters, but it was too hard to explain!
@Emily - so glad I'm not the only one. And I've never seen the Polar Express...
@Lauren - awwwwww, that's so sad! Mean parents...
@Deidre - I haven't seen Splash or Big. I have no idea what I was doing during the 80s, but clearly it wasn't watching those!

  8. OH! I love this movie! I remember watching it over and over and over as a kid! Great choice :)

  9. I must admit to quite liking that movie although I haven't seen it for ages.

  10. When this movie came out on VHS back in 199(?) my brother and I watched it every morning for two weeks that summer. "Table 9 your pizza is ready." *bada ching*

Leave me a comment and I'll love you forever (except for spambots...)
