Movie Mondays: The Italian Job

So I have a confession to make. I prefer this version of The Italian Job to the original.

I know it's widely considered a sacrilege, but there you have it! Although considering I've only seen the original once, it's not surprising that I prefer the version I've seen dozens of times. I should really watch the original again before I make sweeping statements, shouldn't I? *runs off to add it to Quickflix queue*

Reasons why The Italian Job is awesome:
1. Seth Green.
2. The brilliance that is the initial theft.
3. Jason Statham.
4. Venice.
5. Edward Norton's insane moustache. That thing deserves an award.
6. Wheeeeeeeee, shiny treasure!
7. Charlize Theron cracking safes and driving like a maniac. She's a total badass.
8. This scene:
9. The scene where they drive through the subway.
10. Mos Def.
11. Seriously, how did they not know that Edward Norton was going to screw them over with a moustache like that?!
12. The boat chase scene.
13. Marky Mark. Sadly, minus The Funky Bunch.
14. Skinny Pete playing golf. Totally how I would play golf too.

Plus, the following quotes:
- "Handsome Rob [Jason Statham]. Once drove all the way from Los Angeles just so he could set the record for longest freeway chase. You know he got 110 love letters sent to his jail cell from women who saw him on the news?"
- "I'm getting a NAD T700 digital decoder with 70-watt amps and Burr-Brown DACs." "Yeah........" "It's a big stereo. Speakers so loud they blow women's clothes off." "NOW you're talking!"
- "I trust everyone. I just don't trust the devil inside them."
- "You know what 'fine' stands for? Freaked out, insecure, neurotic and emotional."
- "If there's one thing I know, it's never to mess with Mother Nature, mother-in-laws, and mother-freaking Ukranians!"
- "[looks at fake ID] James Hymen? COME ON! Just ONCE give me a cool name!"
- "You know, five people died of smoking in between traffic lights today."
- "[calculates how much the gold is worth] YEAH!!!!!!! [sees people noticing him]... I got the Holy Spirit... You should get on it... It's a good train..."
- "Shit. This dude got dogs. I don't do dogs. I had a real bad experience, man." "What happened?" "I had. A bad. EXPERIENCE. Dammit! I'm deaf!!"

So, there you have it. Have you seen it? And which one gets your vote - the original? Or the remake?

K xx

  1. I honestly love both Italian Job movies, but they're so incredibly different that it's not really sacrilege to like the newer one more.

It's hard to dislike it with Jason, though. He's just too funny. And Mos Def.

PS: I only really like the old one because I love Michael Caine.

  2. I enjoyed both Italian JObs, but kind of like you, I like the newer one better. And I think that is mostly do to Seth Green.

  3. I'm totally with you on this one - like Ocean's Eleven, I'm not a fan of the old one (which may be in part related to the fact that I watched it directly after the new one and was let down a bit).

And then when I watched the special features and discovered that not only were all the car chase scenes real, but that they were also filmed with the actual actors driving, I was swept away :)

  4. @Nikki - excellent point. I suppose the 2003 version could be considered a 'reimagining' rather than a remake! And you really can't go wrong with Michael Caine!!
@Deidre - Cosign. Seth Green totally made the movie for me too.
@Nessa - Haven't seen the original Ocean's Eleven. But I've not heard great things about it, so I might avoid it!

Leave me a comment and I'll love you forever (except for spambots...)
