30 Days of Books - Day 1

There are a whole stack of "30 Days of..." memes around on the internet, with "30 Days of Truth" being one of the most common. I've never been tempted to do that one, but when I saw this on Gillian's blog the other day, I knew I couldn't resist. So let's get this show on the road! (Don't worry, I'm not going to post it 30 days running. That's far too much like hard work for all concerned...)

Day 1 - the best book you read last year.

This is a really hard one for me, given how many books I read in a year, including all the research I have to do at work. So I'm going to cheat, and do one fiction book, and one non-fiction book. In terms of non-fiction, I'd say it's hands down Van Diemen's Land by James Boyce, which I read for work.

If you're interested in the early history and settlement of Tasmania, this is the book for you. The amount of detail involved is ridiculous. It's fascinating and intriguing and occasionally horrifying. Boyce has a book about the history of Melbourne coming out later this year, and I can't wait to read it.

On the fiction front, I'd have to give it to "The Lollipop Shoes" by Joanne Harris.

It's the sequel to "Chocolat", and it's awesome. The story is told by three different narrators, which means the voice is constantly changing. I've read it about three times in the past year, and I adore it a little bit more every time. And it's filled with amazing shoes, and we all know how much I love those! ;) Here's hoping they decide to make a movie version of it before Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp get too old to reprise their roles from Chocolat!!

  3. My mom is reading The Lollipop Shoes right now. I really love the cover, and if shoes are involved, I might have to add this to my TBR list at some point.

  4. Emmy - you should read them both! They're so amazing. Just don't be surprised when they're not set in the same era as the movie of Chocolat...

Gina - you should definitely join us on the bandwagon!!

Gillian - it definitely needs to be on your TBR list ;)
